This month, Professor Emerita Rudine Sims Bishop, Teaching and Learning, was named the recipient of the 2017 Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement by the American Library Association. Bishop has significantly influenced the growth and appreciation of multicultural children’s literature on an international level. Rudine Sims Bishop recalls her career as a professor focusing on multicultural children’s literature in the College of Education.

The announcement was made today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits held January 24 - 28, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rudine Sims Bishop recalls her career as a professor focusing on multicultural children’s literature in the College of Education. Bishop came to OSU in 1986 after teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1990, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop published an essay about the importance of providing young readers with diverse books that reflect the “multicultural nature of the world” in which we live.
